ASHRAE Holds Its First European HVAC Design Level I Training

Engineers from Portugal and Spain attended Europe’s first ASHAE HVAC Design Level I training, March 6 to 8, at the Ordem Dos Engenheiros in Lisbon. “The greatest challenge facing engineering firms and building owners is maintaining a work force that understands the fundamentals of HVAC design and that is current with the application of new technologies,” said Serafin Grana from ASHRAE’s Portugal Chapter who organized the training with Andres Sepulveda from the Spain Chapter. Charlie Henck, a US-based ASHRAE member, led the instructor team drawing on his 40 years of consulting experience. He was joined by ASHRAE members José Luís Alexandre, from Portugal’s University of Porto, and Rafael Úrculo, a consulting engineer in Spain.

Organizers of the first ever European presentation of ASHRAE HVAC Design Level I course prepare to meet the attendees. Twenty-five engineers, the room’s capacity, attended, representing various levels of experience. Along with covering the fundamentals, the training reviews applications of current technology, addresses common design problems, and encourages registrant interaction to share solutions. The course was adapted by Alexandre and Urcula to reflect European regulation and compare them to ASHRAE standards. Carrier Portugal sponsored the training. May 8 to 10 the training will move to Madrid.
